VOLUNTEER WEEK:
Cajamarca is a beautiful city located at about 9,000 feet
elevation in the Andes mountains of Peru.
It has a tremendous amount of history relating to the capture there of
the last of the Incas by the Spanish Conquistador, Francisco Pizarro, and the
subsequent centuries of events.
We have been asked by the medical community there to join them
in providing care for the citizens who have so much trouble making ends
meet. The economy in this region has had
a severe downturn in the last several years and the needs are increasing. We are hoping to recruit primary and
specialty care providers, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, social
workers, psychologists and other care providers.
We will be working in a variety of settings, including a mobile
clinic and other fixed clinic sites, two of which are more remote. There is also a residential facility for
people of all ages with disabilities of all kinds that they are requesting help
for. It will be a busy, but rewarding week.
Since we will be there for the new year we will have the added
bonus of a free day and a half to do some sightseeing in the city. We’ll be able to learn a lot about the
history of the region that has such a big impact on their present-day
reality.
TOURIST WEEK:
When we finally say good bye to our friends that we have been
working with all week we’ll be flying to Cusco.
This mountaintop city will steal your heart. It’s the gateway to the incredible Sacred
Valley of the Incas which we will tour over the next several days. Cusco, itself, is an unbelievable treasure
trove of sights, including places like Coricancha (The Sun Temple),
Sacsayhuaman, and the Cathedral that rivals many of those in Europe. You will find the stone work that was done by
the Incas to be incredible. In addition,
the whole region is studded with a rich array of Inca and pre-Inca ruins as well
as some of the most impressive mountain landscapes you can find anywhere. Our guides will share the history of the
whole area – from Cusco to Ollanta y Tambo – with us in detail and we will
ultimately find ourselves in the legendary citadel of Machu Picchu. Prepare to be utterly amazed!
