Country: Peru

Location: Antioquía, a small town near Lima

Cost: US $Closed

Level of Physical Challenge:

Special Requirements/Qualifications/Skills Needed:

No special skills are necessary. We will be working with professional artists and art educators during the preparation phase of this project. After that we will be helping the community to prepare and paint their buildings so there will be plenty for all of us to do.

Project Background:

There are many small towns in rural Peru. Most are not affluent communities, even when they are close to the capitol of Lima. They are, however, often picturesque and what might be called quaint in many circles. We have been asked by one such community to help them turn their little town into a work of art - literally. We will be working with a group of trained artists and instructors, using photographs of the town, and interviewing the residents. Through that process we will come up with a pleasing color scheme and a pattern that will unify the town and create a unique overall appearance that will draw tourists to the area to see what has been done. We do not know exactly what the results will be yet, but we know that our work will be an improvement in the appearance of the town and the new color scheme will be a source of pride for all of its citizens. In addition, the paint will provide more protection from the harsh Andean environment than they have at present.

Additional Information:

A detailed itinerary is available by email. Please request one - and we will send it right back.
An optional second week is available for an additional fee. You will tour Cusco, the Sacred Valley of the Incas, and Machu Picchu. And, since our volunteers have a variety of backgrounds, interest levels, and physical capabilities, we want to offer another way to explore this great country, too. That is to hike the fabled Inca Trail. If you would like to enjoy this incredible hike to get to Machu Picchu we can certainly arrange that. It is a four-day, three-night guided hike that ascends over at least one 4,800 meter (over 16,000 feet) mountain pass. An additional fee will apply. Please let us know well in advance if you would like to exercise this option since special arrangements must be made.
